The Structure of the Tarot: 22 Major and 56 Minor Arcana
The 22 Major Arcana tell the long epic of the soul; the 56 Minor Arcana paint the joys and sorrows of everyday life.
The Major Arcana: twenty-two doors on life's journey
The Major Arcana has 22 cards. It begins with card 0, the Fool, setting out with a small bundle, passes through the Magician, the High Priestess, the Lovers, the Wheel of Fortune, and the Tower, and arrives at completion with card 21, the World. When several Major Arcana cards appear in one spread, the matter is often touching a deep life lesson or an important turning point.
The Minor Arcana: everyday life woven from four elements
The Minor Arcana has 56 cards in four suits: Wands (Fire), Cups (Water), Swords (Air), and Pentacles (Earth). Wands are about passion and action, Cups hold love and emotion, Swords reflect thought and struggle, and Pentacles are rooted in work, money, and the practical rhythms of daily life.
The sixteen court cards: the people at the table
Each suit has four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King. Sometimes they represent a vivid person in your life; sometimes they act as a side mirror, reflecting the attitude you bring to your current situation.
